Date: Friday, 29 September 2017
Venue: Lipsius Building, room 148, Cleveringaplaats 1, Leiden
This masterclass is about the art of spoken word, in which people will be guided in the process of working on their own text. The exchange is divided in two parts; participants will first engage in a discussion and share experiences, guided by Fiona Dragstra, before they will be challenged to work on their own text, guided by the rising Cameroonian star Lydol la Slameuse.
Themes for discussion in the first part will be pros and cons of digital forms of expression and radicalisation, issues of personal safety, privacy and the responsibility for sharing content on social media platforms. At times, images or videos of violent acts are transferred from one locality to another without context, which might fuel already explosive situations. How can we avoid this happens with our own expressions? The final theme will be strategies to have more outreach.
In the second part, the participants will work on a text for a spoken word performance around the festival’s theme, guided by Lydol and other spoken word artists. In line with the spirit of V4T, the best ones will be published on our website and social media accounts and go viral. Make sure to be there!
