In October 2019, an intensive day of collaboration between researchers from the Nomade Sahel network and the slam artist collective Plumes du Sahel (Niger) resulted in the following recording. The researchers worked in a project about the conflict in the Sahel. They interviewed many people in the province Tillabary in Niger, where the Jihadi war of the Sahel has arrived and people have been partly radicalised or been subject to attacks. This conflict touches everybody in the Sahel. With the artists Mahir, Bachir Gentil, Ham D Mallam, Nourrath and Saint Isaac Le Monument. Listen here and read the translated lyrics below.

Translated lyrics:

Amadou Hama a.k.a. Mahir

Bompen hamré

Houro ma , houro ma nino;

Niger dou leydi amin no;
Kaoro dein lato dein go au
Kaoro dein , boapein konous
Kaoro dein , gniben leydi amin

Bompein hamré
Diwein berné belérè
Kaorodein der yide

(Let’s stop the wars,
Let’s not hold grudges,
Let us unite for peace.

Home is your home
Africa is for all of us!
Niger is also our country,
Let’s be united (one),
Let us unite the people of my country.

Let’s stop the wars,
Let’s not hold grudges,
Let us unite for peace.)

The world’s gone to hell and men are wandering around in circles…
Out there, the girls don’t sing at night anymore.
The Sowers of Terror make joy bleed.
Only the cries of dying souls.
Children losing their parents.
And mothers burying their offspring.
Outside…
My land groans the bump.
You’re a troublemaker. You’re making a mistake.
There’s nothing angelic about inflicting fear.
Nothing. Nothing.
Because just like you…
I could sow terror.
Ban clouds from flying.
Keep the lightning from rumbling.
But no!
I could light up my rage
Wipe the smile off their faces.
Punishing the guilty
And the accomplices in these heinous acts…
But no!
Then let me tame the mind.
Endowing a brain has all the culprits with blood spilled…
And shut down the panic.
Pouring down the rain of peace from the zenith.
And you live…
Put a smile on your face. Look at the equator.
For as long as the breath remains in you…
Tomorrow will be better.

Refrain :
Tachin hankali
Ya sa kamou cikin wani yanayi
Hakouri da jouna chiné ya kamata mouyi
Bâ wata masala
Wada batada magani
Hikma
Kessa a tchiyo kan lamari
Bâ wata moussiba
Wada batada magani
Saurari juna sanan muyi hankuri

(The instability has led us into a state of despair…
Being patient (Tolerant) is the best thing we can do.
There is no problem without a solution
Strategies are the tricks to achieve the desired results.
There’s no such thing as a never-ending disaster
Let’s listen to each other and accept each other).

Nourratou Oumarou Hega a.k.a. Nourrath

Laklakaney kaney a ba haw a ba Bari
(Peace is better than cows and horses)
(Zerma’s proverb that peace is the greatest of riches)

Weapons strike
Our souls are cracking
Shot by my brother, I wonder what my mistake was…
I’ve seen humans spill blood
That you’re bleeding poor innocent people
I have seen the sons of the nation set my land on fire and ashes…
My writings grind the bitterness of a traumatized population
a victim of emotional abuse, because I saw the new generation in tears…
Lack of support and the massacre of weapons
My heart is crying
My soul is dying
My pen is bleeding
Only serial killings
Did you make blood your favorite color?
Please don’t talk about my religion.
Are guns the answer?

No, brother!

Isaac Oumarou Maman a.k.a. Saint Isaac Le Monument

I saw the silence being shattered by screams…
I have seen peace sullied by so much barbarism…
I’ve seen national cohesion destroyed by morons…
I have seen the cement of a united people crumble in their ephoria!

In what some call “security incidents”…

I’m reading thousands of displaced people
Women abducted and raped
People injured and even killed
I read my grieving nation!

And I’m allowing myself a moral moment,
To tell them all this is abnormal!

I allow myself to tell them to be aware,
To stop this cycle of revenge!

I allow myself to tell them that violence is not the solution to our grievances!

I allow myself to tell them that we don’t build ourselves up by shedding the blood ……..of the innocent!
