How do the traditional hairstyles of Palenque reflect its history and culture?
The traditional hairstyles of Palenque are a living expression of its history and culture. During the time of slavery, these hairstyles served as a secret means of communication, with braids representing maps and escape routes. Today, they remain a symbol of resistance, identity, and cultural heritage, passed down through generations and celebrated at events such as the Festival of Drums and Cultural Expressions.

In San Basilio de Palenque, hairstyles and braids are much more than simple adornments; they are a living legacy handed down from generation to generation. The interviewee learned this art from her mother and sisters, perfecting it through practice. At the Festival of Drums and Cultural Expressions, she stood out by winning first place in 2015 with her hairstyle “Cry of Freedom.” This design is inspired by the hairstyles enslaved people used as a secret communication system to escape. Today, Nilda continues braiding and sharing this valuable tradition with her 13-year-old daughter.
