In a beautiful room in Scheltema paintings, audiovisual works, and photographs approach the concept of movement, theme of the festival Voice 4 Thought 2016. The movement is most often conceived in its physical dimension, but it can also be an inner process, or a political one. The curator of the exhibition ‘In Movement’ is Zoe Reddy.
With paintings of landscapes of dynamic stillness, Cindy van der Aa grasps time and movement in the aesthetics of the brush strokes. Besides, Jurriaan van Otterloo takes the audience from the rhythms of the city to the rhythm of dance, celebrating with via an audiovisual creation an everyday dance, the movements of the city. In the center of the exhibition space echo the voices of singers and rappers captured by Sjoerd Sysma. His audiovisual work focuses on political commitment and music, outlining the features of a thought in motion. On easels installed on a carpet of words, with sketches and temperatures that seem to represent the movement of creation, Sapin Makengele offers two readings of the movement, between a table suggesting the idea of an intergalactic travel and a portrait of Kinshasa so animated that the viewer would expect it to come to life. Finally, the photographs of Rome Schmidt are striking: by overlaying different portraits of refugees taken in different moments, it evokes his own experience of movement.
This path through different artistic forms and movement challenges the viewer and invites him to move and be moved.
