Successful conference organised by high school students in Leiden

On September 22nd high school students from Visser ’t Hooft Lyceum and Bonaventure College organised a conference fort heir fellow scholars. About eighty students participated this day, which revolved around the theme ‘People in motion; prejudice or condemnation’. Students felt the need to discuss prejudices because people in motion get into contact with differences which may cause prejudices; not only at school but also when refugees are involved, for instance.
The Kick Off the day was made by Marieke van der Velden, photographer and documentary maker from the acclaimed documentary ‘the island of all together’. She showed students that, by conversing with each other, you come to realize that you are not that different at all. In the documentary itself, she let tourists and refugees on Lesbos talk with each other with this realization as the conclusion.
During one of the two workshops, some interesting discussions erupted about prejudices from the students themselves and how they dealt with that. The other workshop made clear that a lot of prejudices you have about the person in front of you are not true at all, but also that it is not strange that we have prejudices; they make life less complex. The day ended with a message from Johan de Deugd, social sciences teacher at the Bonaventure College. ‘Everyone has prejudices’ he said, ‘but it is up to you what you do with them’. Every person has a story, and if you do not know that story, it is difficult for it to pass judgement.
Students filmed the whole day under the supervision of Maarten van der Burg, educational film maker. The outcome is shown on Friday, September 23, during the Voice4Thought dinner at Scheltema.

Succesvolle scholierenconferentie in Leiden
Op 22 september organiseerden Leidse scholieren van Visser ’t Hooft Lyceum en Bonaventura College een conferentie voor hun medescholieren in het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. Zo’n 80 scholieren namen deel aan de dag van het Voice4Thought Festival, dat in het teken stond van het thema ‘People in Motion: Vooroordelen of veroordelen’. Leerlingen voelden de behoefte vooroordelen te bespreken omdat de ‘people in motion’ vaak met verschillende achtergronden te maken waarbij vooroordelen kunnen ontstaan. Niet alleen op school, maar ook met bijvoorbeeld vluchtelingen.
Marieke van der Velden, fotografe en documentairemaakster van o.a. de bejubelde documentaire ‘the island of all together’, trapte de dag af. Zij liet de leerlingen zien dat je door met elkaar in gesprek te gaan erachter komt dat je niet zo erg verschilt van de ‘ander’ aan de hand van de documentaire over vluchtelingen en toeristen op Lesbos. Tijdens de workshops die de jongeren zelf in elkaar hadden gezet, braken interessante discussies los; over hoe de leerlingen zelf kijken naar vooroordelen en daarmee omgaan. Gedurende de hele conferentie werd duidelijk dat de meeste vooroordelen die mensen op het eerste gezicht hebben, vaak niet kloppen. Maar ook dat het niet zo gek is dat vooroordelen er zijn; het maakt het leven minder complex. De dag werd afgesloten met een boodschap van Johan de Deugd, docent maatschappijwetenschappen van het Bonaventura College, dat iedereen vooroordelen heeft, maar dat het aan jou ligt wat je daarmee doet. Iedere persoon heeft een verhaal en als je dat verhaal niet kent, is het lastig om een oordeel over iemand te vellen.
De conferentie is door de scholieren zelf vastgelegd in filmpjes onder begeleiding van Maarten van der Burg, die vertoond zijn op het voice4thought diner.
De Scholierenconferentie is een initiatief van LeidenGlobal en Stichting Confessioneel Onderwijs Leiden (SCOL). De formule waarbij scholieren hun medescholieren op leuke wijze bewust maken van maatschappelijke thema’s, werd in september 2015 voor het eerst succesvol uitgevoerd samen met Global Imaginations. In 2016 is de conferentie een onderdeel van het Voice4Thought Festival.
